Project 4: Montage

P5SamDalton

  1. Description: A montage of two or more images put together to create an inspiring image while using appealing typography to portray the message.
  2. Process:I found the images on google images. I made sure to find files with the search tool of image size larger than 4 MP. I edited the images and blended them together in photoshop. I made sure to make the Christus image quite large when I embedded it so I had a lot to work with while blending. I made sure to use a drop shadow around the text so it would stand out against the white clouds on earth since I lowered the opacity of the text.
  3. Message: I wanted to make it clear that the Savior is looking over everyone on earth and that we aren’t alone. I wanted a familiar image to members of the LDS church so I used the Christus from Temple Square. I also liked the cyclone in the atmosphere because it shows the tumult of what we go through here on earth.
  4. Audience: My main audience is members of the LDS church.
  5. Top Thing Learned: The top thing I learned was how to blend an image into another effectively.
  6. Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I tried to colorize the blue of the earth to make it pop a bit more.
  7. Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic: Blue
  8. Title Font Name & Category: Kirvy Bold: Slab sans serif
  9. Copy Font Name & Category: Kirvy: Slab sans serif

Project 3: Photodesign

P3SamDalton

  1. Description: Practice and show skills in photography and photo editing while using good color schemes to develop a poster with a photo I’ve taken myself.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I first took a number of photo’s with a simple Sony digital camera and selected the best one. I then looked at the colors in the photo and saw that an Analogous color scheme would fit the image the best. I used photoshop to edit the photo and place the text boxes. I utilized the editing tools of levels, sharpness, saturation, and color selection. I designed the poster to be 11 x 8.5.
  3. Message: I wanted to have a clever title for the spring blossoms so I went with a popular primary song. I wanted it to be fun and bright.
  4. Audience: Anyone familiar with the primary song, “Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree” meaning mostly members of the LDS church.
  5. Top Thing Learned: How powerful photoshop is in making your photo into exactly what you want despite the shot you’ve taken.
  6. Color scheme and color names: Analogous: Lime, Green, Teal
  7. Title Font Name & Category: Rialto NF, Decorative
  8. Copy Font Name & Category: Times New Roman, Old-style
  9. Thumbnail of original, unedited image inserted
  10. Date and location you took the photo(s): May 19, 2016  just outside the south entrance of the Spori building.

In order to get the pictures that would fill the assignment I stayed close to the Spori Building since there is plenty of landscaping to work with. I caught the sky at a good time where there were some clouds with character. I had to take a few shots to keep some light poles out of awkward spots. The window sill in the Scroll office made a great place to capture an image of my milkshake. I found a fire hydrant just outside the west doors of the Spori Building with good trees in the background. I struggle to get a shot without people on the sidewalk between the hydrant and the tree but I eventually was able to. The focus worked great and I didn’t have much issue there. Spencer was kind enough to be my “model” for my composition shots of thirds and lead room. These shots were pretty simple and after editing I think turned out great.

Overall I didn’t have to change my camera settings too much in order to get the shots I wanted. Really I just took my time to frame the image, get the focus right, and then shoot the image. It took a few attempts on the composition shot of thirds since the lighting from the skylight was a bit odd but all in all it was a fun process.

Project 2 Event Ad

P2SamDalton

  1. Description: A full bleed event ad that follows an appealing color scheme.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I found the image of the two jets in an issue of Wired Magazine. I scanned the image in and loaded it onto Word 2011 on Mac. I used the photo as the back layer and then used the curved line tool to create the blue and red waves which were the second layer. I then loaded the picture of the jets in again and got rid of the background. I then laid the jets over the original image of the jets and the waved lines to make the lines look like they are in the back. My last later was the title and the the event information. I made the Jets point upward in order to make the flow go from the title up to the event information. I kept the event information between the jets to keep everything together.
  3. Message: This is a an air show to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. I wanted my audience to understand that the air show is a charity and will be taking place in Rexburg.
  4. Audience: My audience is the residents of Rexburg, specifically those who are associated with military.
  5. Color scheme and color names: Triadic color scheme; Red, Yellow, Blue.
  6. Top Thing Learned: How to scan a picture into the best pixel quality.
  7. Title Font Name & Category: Playball – Decorative
  8. Copy Font Name & Category: SF Old Republic – Sans Serif
  9. Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: The pictures was an advertisement from Wired Magazine. It was a full page so 8.5 by 11 inches but I cropped it down when I scanned it. The scanner I used was in the lab that we meet for class.

Project 1 Flier

SamDaltonInDesignFlier

  1. Description: A flier intended to promote a graduate leadership conference done in black and white.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I started by thinking how I wanted it to look. I then made four sketches of my best ideas. Following this I used InDesign to create a draft of my best idea I drew. I used repetition with the rectangular boxes while breaking up the pattern with the curved image and having words in the white space and image. I made a stark contrast with while letters in a black box to create “Leadership” as the focal point. The image, logo and content were provided.
  3. Message: The message is to inform recent graduates of a leadership conference that will give them an edge in their careers.
  4. Audience: Individuals who have recently graduated and are between the ages of 22-32.
  5. Top Thing Learned: I learned how powerful flow is and why things need to come together in order to not detract from the message.
  6. Title Font Name & Category: Nimbus Sans L Regular – Sans Serif
  7. Copy Font Name & Category: Times New Roman – Oldstyle
