Project 9: Portfolio

Portfolio (Scribd.com)

Project Corrections / Time spent: I spent 30 minutes fixing up my letter head design since it was very pixelated. I re-aligned it on the page to be a bit more evenly spaced from the edges. I spent another 30 minutes working on my business card designs since they were also pixelated and I did not like the proximity of all the elements. I then spent an hour fixing my first logo designs. I played around with the color scheme and then put it into grayscale and white with a solid color background.

Message: This is a portfolio showcasing all the work I produced throughout the semester of Comm 130.

Audience: This project is targeted towards potential clients and employers along with Brother Pingel.

Top Thing Learned: I have never used master pages in InDesign before so I learned a lot about how helpful that feature of the program is.

Future application of Visual Media: I want to be versatile in my career in the field of communication. I want to be able to produce anything that is asked of me.

Color scheme and color names: Triadic; Red, Yellow, Blue.

Title Font Name & Category: Lemon Milk, Sans Serif

Youtube Video Link:

  1. Description: A tri-fold brochure detailing the history of Pepsico.
  2. Process: This was a lengthy process spanning two weeks. I used InDesign to create the base of the project. I decided to use a traditional tri-fold brochure style because it is simple and comfortable. I divided the page into equal thirds and marked the folds. In order to get the images to look the way I wanted I turned them into png files on photoshop and edited out the backgrounds. I decided to put the bottle over one of the folds so the text on both columns would wrap around the image. The new logo I created in Illustrator and then placed the png file of the logo on the back of the brochure. To create the bubbles I just made circles on InDesign and used the color dropper tool to copy the colors from the pepsi logo along with adding in some yellow from the original logo I created. I then changed the transparency and sent the circles to the back of the image of the glass.
  1. Message:  Inform the audience of the history of Pepsi Cola.
  2. Audience: Anyone interested in the history of the soft drink company.
  3. Top Thing Learned: I learned a lot about how to format a paragraph design so I can create uniform paragraphs throughout.
  4. Color scheme and color names: Triadic, Red Yellow Blue
  5. Title Font Name & Category: ! Pepsi !, modern
  6. Copy Font Name & Category: Timeless, oldstyle
  7. Word Count of copy: 410

Project 7: Web Page

Screen Shot 2016-06-25 at 9.27.40 AM

  1. Description: This is a web page created with HTML and CSS in order to display an original logo I created along with describing the process behind creating the logo.
  2. Process: I first wrote out the code for the website in an HTML document on Text Wrangler thus creating the skeleton of the website. I then created a CSS document using the same coding software. I made sure everything was right by using a text validator online to look for any kinks that were causing my code to not work.  Once I was able to get the two documents put together and working I threw in some creativity. I used the same color of blue from my logo on the heading of the page. I then outlined the box with black to match the color of the hose which makes the “2.” I originally had the body text the same blue as the heading but I later changed it to black to make it more readable. I left the headers blue to add contrast. I put the image of a man using shotcrete in the background to help identify what the logo is advertising. With an image in the background, the box with all the text and logo was blocking off most of the background image so I looked up on Google how to change the opacity. That was a simple job on CSS.
  3. Message: G2B is a company that specializes in shotcrete, shoring and grout work.
  4. Audience: Construction companies and industries that require shotcrete, shoring and grout work.
  5. Top Thing Learned: Coding software is very powerful and makes the job of coding quite simple. CSS was fun to figure out how to make things look nice.
  6. Color scheme and color hex(s): Monochromatic blue. Blue: #1D4486 Black: #000000 White: #FFF
  7. Title Font Families & Category: Arial Black, Sans-serif
  8. Copy Font Families & Category: Arial, Sans-Serif
  9. Changes made to the CSS: I changed the font families and the colors to match my logo. I also changed the background from a solid color to an image.
  10. Word Count: 296 not counting headings.

Project 6: Stationary

P6SamDaltonP6SamDaltonCardP6BlogPostCard

  1. Description: Custom stationary using an original logo design that matches throughout.
  2. Process: I created the logo using Adobe Illustrator. The “GB” was created using a simple text box and then resizing and adjustment of the letters. The “2” was made out of simple shapes over a typed 2 in order to make sure the curves and angles were correct. I used the ruler guides to create a grid and copied and pasted a line I created until the grid was made. The concrete background was made with simple shapes as well.
  3. Message: I want it to be clear that the company is in the business of shotcrete shoring and grout. Each component of the design is made up of one of those three things. The background represents what shotcrete and shoring looks like. The hose also represents spraying shotcrete and pumping grout.
  4. Audience: This is targeted at construction companies that will require shotcrete shoring and or grout.
  5. Top Thing Learned: I learned a lot more about how to create images from scratch on Illustrator.
  6. Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic Blue accented with grey and black.
  7. Title Font Name & Category: Scream Real, Sans Serif
  8. Copy Font Name & Category: Timeless, Serif

Project 5: Logos

SamDaltonP5Logos

  1. Description: Three different logos advertising a custom cabinet business which utilize three different ideas and color schemes.
  2. Process: This project was done solely with Adobe Illustrator. I inserted a color wheel image to ensure my color schemes were correct. I mainly used the shape tools along with the pen tool. I played around with the perspective tool which allowed me to create the box in the bottom logo.
  3. Message: I wanted the logos to have colors and designs that relate to cabinetry and wood working. The designs should easily convey that the company is a cabinet building company.
  4. Audience: Anyone who is looking to purchase custom cabinets.
  5. Top Thing Learned: The major lesson I learned was how to create images with the shape tool.
  6. Color Scheme and Color Names: Top, Analogous: Brick Orange Gold. Middle, Triadic: Orange, Teal, Indigo. Bottom, Monochromatic: Orange.
  7. Title / Body Font Names & Categories: Top: Libel Suite Regular: Sans Serif. Middle: Libel Suite Regular: Sans Serif. Bottom: Vonique 64: Slab.

Project 4: Montage

P5SamDalton

  1. Description: A montage of two or more images put together to create an inspiring image while using appealing typography to portray the message.
  2. Process:I found the images on google images. I made sure to find files with the search tool of image size larger than 4 MP. I edited the images and blended them together in photoshop. I made sure to make the Christus image quite large when I embedded it so I had a lot to work with while blending. I made sure to use a drop shadow around the text so it would stand out against the white clouds on earth since I lowered the opacity of the text.
  3. Message: I wanted to make it clear that the Savior is looking over everyone on earth and that we aren’t alone. I wanted a familiar image to members of the LDS church so I used the Christus from Temple Square. I also liked the cyclone in the atmosphere because it shows the tumult of what we go through here on earth.
  4. Audience: My main audience is members of the LDS church.
  5. Top Thing Learned: The top thing I learned was how to blend an image into another effectively.
  6. Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I tried to colorize the blue of the earth to make it pop a bit more.
  7. Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic: Blue
  8. Title Font Name & Category: Kirvy Bold: Slab sans serif
  9. Copy Font Name & Category: Kirvy: Slab sans serif

Project 3: Photodesign

P3SamDalton

  1. Description: Practice and show skills in photography and photo editing while using good color schemes to develop a poster with a photo I’ve taken myself.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I first took a number of photo’s with a simple Sony digital camera and selected the best one. I then looked at the colors in the photo and saw that an Analogous color scheme would fit the image the best. I used photoshop to edit the photo and place the text boxes. I utilized the editing tools of levels, sharpness, saturation, and color selection. I designed the poster to be 11 x 8.5.
  3. Message: I wanted to have a clever title for the spring blossoms so I went with a popular primary song. I wanted it to be fun and bright.
  4. Audience: Anyone familiar with the primary song, “Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree” meaning mostly members of the LDS church.
  5. Top Thing Learned: How powerful photoshop is in making your photo into exactly what you want despite the shot you’ve taken.
  6. Color scheme and color names: Analogous: Lime, Green, Teal
  7. Title Font Name & Category: Rialto NF, Decorative
  8. Copy Font Name & Category: Times New Roman, Old-style
  9. Thumbnail of original, unedited image inserted
  10. Date and location you took the photo(s): May 19, 2016  just outside the south entrance of the Spori building.

In order to get the pictures that would fill the assignment I stayed close to the Spori Building since there is plenty of landscaping to work with. I caught the sky at a good time where there were some clouds with character. I had to take a few shots to keep some light poles out of awkward spots. The window sill in the Scroll office made a great place to capture an image of my milkshake. I found a fire hydrant just outside the west doors of the Spori Building with good trees in the background. I struggle to get a shot without people on the sidewalk between the hydrant and the tree but I eventually was able to. The focus worked great and I didn’t have much issue there. Spencer was kind enough to be my “model” for my composition shots of thirds and lead room. These shots were pretty simple and after editing I think turned out great.

Overall I didn’t have to change my camera settings too much in order to get the shots I wanted. Really I just took my time to frame the image, get the focus right, and then shoot the image. It took a few attempts on the composition shot of thirds since the lighting from the skylight was a bit odd but all in all it was a fun process.

Project 2 Event Ad

P2SamDalton

  1. Description: A full bleed event ad that follows an appealing color scheme.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I found the image of the two jets in an issue of Wired Magazine. I scanned the image in and loaded it onto Word 2011 on Mac. I used the photo as the back layer and then used the curved line tool to create the blue and red waves which were the second layer. I then loaded the picture of the jets in again and got rid of the background. I then laid the jets over the original image of the jets and the waved lines to make the lines look like they are in the back. My last later was the title and the the event information. I made the Jets point upward in order to make the flow go from the title up to the event information. I kept the event information between the jets to keep everything together.
  3. Message: This is a an air show to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. I wanted my audience to understand that the air show is a charity and will be taking place in Rexburg.
  4. Audience: My audience is the residents of Rexburg, specifically those who are associated with military.
  5. Color scheme and color names: Triadic color scheme; Red, Yellow, Blue.
  6. Top Thing Learned: How to scan a picture into the best pixel quality.
  7. Title Font Name & Category: Playball – Decorative
  8. Copy Font Name & Category: SF Old Republic – Sans Serif
  9. Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: The pictures was an advertisement from Wired Magazine. It was a full page so 8.5 by 11 inches but I cropped it down when I scanned it. The scanner I used was in the lab that we meet for class.

Project 1 Flier

SamDaltonInDesignFlier

  1. Description: A flier intended to promote a graduate leadership conference done in black and white.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I started by thinking how I wanted it to look. I then made four sketches of my best ideas. Following this I used InDesign to create a draft of my best idea I drew. I used repetition with the rectangular boxes while breaking up the pattern with the curved image and having words in the white space and image. I made a stark contrast with while letters in a black box to create “Leadership” as the focal point. The image, logo and content were provided.
  3. Message: The message is to inform recent graduates of a leadership conference that will give them an edge in their careers.
  4. Audience: Individuals who have recently graduated and are between the ages of 22-32.
  5. Top Thing Learned: I learned how powerful flow is and why things need to come together in order to not detract from the message.
  6. Title Font Name & Category: Nimbus Sans L Regular – Sans Serif
  7. Copy Font Name & Category: Times New Roman – Oldstyle
